One of the most polarizing issues in Turkey today is not related to football or politics but…. wait for it…. prepackaged baked goods. Most people support one of the 2 major companies, Eti or Ülker. Differences between the two camps have been to known to divide families, ruin relationships, and cost people their jobs. Okay, it’s not that severe, but people here do have a Coca Cola / Pepsi -esque brand loyalty.
I definitely stand with Eti- not because of the popular rumor that the Ülker family supports militant Islamic causes with their profits- but because I can actually eat a few of their products. Today when I was at Macro Center I was amped to see they’ve expanded their gluten-free line.
Glutensiz Bebek Bisküvisi, or Gluten-free Baby Cookies, are far too delicious to just give to babies. They are something like vanilla wafers and taste great plain. I also think they’ll make a good graham cracker replacement in cheesecake crust, in a addition to tasting good in banana pudding. Also at just 2 TL for a pack, they are much cheaper than imported Schar products.
It’s getting easier to be a celiac in Turkey every day.
